Site work at 41-17 Crescent St. in Long Island City, NY. Vibration from piling installation equipment was a significant concern, which is the primary reason helical piles were selected for the deep foundations.

(190) 10.75” diameter x .40 wall helical piles manufactured by IDEAL Group, Webster, NY were installed to a working load of 110 tons at an average depth of 40 feet.  Extensions were bolted and field welded to the lead sections and other extensions.

20’ and 30’ sections were installed with a track how and a 125,000 ft. lb. Pro-Dig-USA torque motor.  A direct torque monitoring system was used to monitor installation torque.

24” diameter x 1” thick helix bearing plates.  The helical piles were non-galvanized.

Project Overview

A 22 story multi-purpose structure with retail shops on lower floors with condos and apartments on upper floors.  Caissons, drilled piers and H piles were considered but, due to close proximity to existing structures, vibration concerns were a significant factor.  For this reason and for overall project cost concerns, helical piles were selected.

Full scale load tests to 220 tons were successfully completed using the ASTM 1146 load test specification.
