Roterra’s engineering team provided a design-build alternative proposal on helical piles that would save the customer time and money.  The original deep foundation solution was drilled shaft with expanded bases (i.e. belled piling) but there was groundwater seepage and sloughing during the geotechnical investigation, which would indicate the requirement for temporary casing that adds cost and time.

After completing a load testing program on site to confirm design capacities on the helical pile alternative solution, a total of 110 helical piles were manufactured and installed for loads up to 135 kips (600kN) per pile.   The largest of the helical piles on this project was a triple 34” (864mm) helix diameter with 1” thick 50W plate.  The piles all made minimum installation torques at their anticipated depths thanks to the experience of the team and the project was completed on budget and on schedule.  Final pile depths ranged from 23 to 30 feet (7 to 9 meters) and final installation torques varied up to 80,000 ft-lbs.
