As part of the state and federal response to COVID 19, a temporary hospital at Stony Brook University was built by FEMA in a matter of days.   Last Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finished converting 255,676-square-feet of Stony Brook University’s campus into a temporary field hospital that is providing care for up to 1,028 non-coronavirus patients and low acuity coronavirus patients, the organization announced.

This effort, which includes several other locations in Long Island and New York City, has doubled the number of hospital beds in New York as the number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 continues to surge. There typically are only 53,000 beds in hospitals statewide, but up to 140,000 are needed, Governor Cuomo said.

Helical piles were the perfect foundation solution due to their rapid installation and the ability to easily remove them when the hospitals are no longer needed.  Pile King in Long Island supplied the piles to the installation contractor.  All of the construction crews worked 24-hours a day and the project was completed ahead of schedule. The hospital is now fully operational.
