Project Overview
Green Diamond Builders was hired by the building owner to complete the conversion of an old fire house into apartments with lower level parking. Breslin Contracting was contracted to provide the saw cutting, concrete removal, Excavation, and helical piles to support the new structural steel columns and to stabilize existing footers.
Helical Pile Installation Information
Installed (76) AB Chance SS5 to RS2875.203 transition helical piles to and embedment of 32’ to support the Firehouse conversion with the following:
- SS5 8”/10”/12” leads
- SS5/RS2875 casting transitions
- RS2875.203 extensions
- New construction caps
Piles were installed with a Kubota excavator equipped with a Eskridge Drive Head, Ramrod equipped with a Pro-dig extension and Pengo drive head as well as hand held Pengo drive head. All equipment was outfitted with AllTorque monitoring systems
Challenges
- Access was very limited with very low clearances. Breslin Contracting used every piece of our helical pile installation equipment on this project from excavators to hand-held drive heads.
- Building was within 10’ of the Mispillion River, so many of the excavations were flooded during high tides.
- Limited power on the site. Breslin crews used a 25kv diesel generator to power the 480v saws and mini excavator.
- No water service. Saw cutting water was drawn from the Mispillion River.
Outcome
Piles were installed to the required depth and torque, on time and on budget, so that Green Diamond Builders could proceed with the apartment fitout.
