Project: Commercial Wall Stabilization

Location: Darby Pennsylvania

Installer: Breslin Contracting, Inc.

Customer: JRJ Construction

Design: Daniels Consulting Engineers

Materials Supplier: Earth Anchoring Suppliers

Installed (28) A B Chance SS5 Helical Tiebacks to design embedment specification with the following:

  • SS5 8”/10” Leads
  • SS5 Extensions
  • SS5 Wall Termination Plates

Tiebacks were installed with a Kubota excavator equipped with an Eskridge drive head and AllTorque monitoring system

History:

JRJ Construction was hired by the building owner to stabilize a 15’ high x 100’ long severely structurally compromised CMU wall. On the recommendation of Daniels Consulting Engineers, Breslin Contracting was brought in to complete the stabilization work. Breslin Contracting has extensive experience with this type of challenging repair as well as being able to perform both the structural repair portion as well as install the tiebacks.

Challenges on the Project Included:

  • CMU wall was in eminent danger of collapse. The GC had to fabricate and install structural steel supports to not only hold the wall so repairs could be completed but to also allow enough room for Breslin’s equipment to access the area
  • A second unseen concrete wall was directly behind a portion of the failing CMU wall, and it had to be core-drilled in order to install the tiebacks in that area
  • This was an operational mechanic shop. Work had to be orchestrated so that the business could remain in operation during construction

Outcome:

Breslin’s Helical Pile crew, working side by side with their Structural Repair crew, completed the wall stabilization on time with very minimal disruption to the business

Next Phase:

JRJ Construction removed the steel bracing after the wall was inspected and signed off by Daniels. The mechanic shop can now resume normal operation in a structurally safe building
