Helical Pile Testing - ICC-ES Certification - CTL Thompson Hubbell-Chance Helical Piles

Breslin Contracting of New Castle, DE was recently tapped to provide foundation underpinning for the Milton Delaware Public Library.  Sitting just a few feet from of the Broadkill River, the Milton Library (built in 1925) relies on bulkheading to shield the foundation from the river’s waters. Severe depressions were noticed in the bulkhead. This led to both replacing the existing bulkheads with steel sheet piles and to underpin and secure the library’s vulnerable concrete foundation.

Test borings showed several dense layers. Recommendation were to install CHANCE SS175 piles with an 10/12/14 helices configuration.  Due to severely limited access, a mini excavator was used to install each pile to a depth of 35 feet.  The project was completed with no disturbance to the natural surroundings of the picturesque setting of the Milton Library riverside home.
