Project: The Continental
Location: Newark, Delaware
Installer: Breslin Contracting, Inc.
Customer: GGA Construction
Pile Design: Earth Anchoring Suppliers
Materials Supplier: Earth Anchoring Suppliers
History: The Continental is a new six story luxury student housing project in Newark, Delaware to help meet the demand for housing for the University of Delaware.
To eliminate the possibility of the sub-level floor of the parking garage floating due to high water table, (95) AB Chance SS5 helical piles were installed to an embedment depth of 25’ or 5700 ft-lbs. with the following configuration:
- SS5 10”/12”/14” leads
- SS5 extensions
- Bolted new construction caps
Piles were installed with a CAT 305 excavator equipped with a Digga Drive Head and AllTorque monitoring system.
Challenges Included:
Extremely hard ground that required pre-drilling on approximately 80% of the piles
- Very tight working conditions
- Piles had to be installed prior to the parking structure construction due to height restrictions
Outcome: Piles were installed on time and on budget
Next Phase: Breslin Contracting will return after the structure is complete and prior to floor slab placement to install the bolted caps. The caps were left off after installion to minimize the chance of damage from the 300 ton crane used to set the precast concrete parking structure.
