Located in New Market, MD, the Kiddie Academy tapped Breslin Contracting to repair its failing foundation. The right side of building was built on fill which was unable to provide the proper support. Before construction was even completed, the building started to sink. Cracks were beginning to show inside the building. Additionally, the structure was built very close to a hill and an existing perimeter fence which created very limited access for excavation and underpinning.
The owner of the Kiddie Academy first contacted CHANCE® Civil Construction. Chance brought in EAS to help coordinate the project and specify the helical piles to be installed. Paul D’Amato from Century Engineering designed the positioning/type of the interior and exterior piles. Breslin installed a total of (30) RS2875.275 round shaft helical piles. Since the crew had to underpin from the building interior, they could not use an excavator, so (15) of the piles were installed with a handheld drive head. Great care had to be taken, as this new construction was 90% complete at the time of the underpinning. Any further damage would have resulted in a delayed opening day for the new child care center.
The Breslin and EAS teams were able to deliver. It took two weeks to excavate, install and backfill. The structure was stabilized with no further delays or damage to the new center.
