AD HOC Committee of Helical Pile Manufacturers Recently Began the AC358 Revision Process

by Wayne Thompson

January, 2019

On December 18, 2018 the Ad Hoc Committee of Helical Pile Manufacturers participated in a conference call meeting to begin the process of revising AC358 and the ESR report format.  Attendees included:

CTL Thompson – Wayne Thompson and Ryan Beck

Cantsink – Andrew Carter

Earth Contact Products – Brandon Walter

Supportworks – Don Deardorff and Kyle Olson

Heli-Pile – John Pack

Hubbell Power Systems (AB Chance) – David Bruce and Gary Seider

IDEAL Foundation Systems – David Frink

MacLean Power Systems – Mark Bryant

Ram Jack Systems Distribution – Darin Willis

Each attendee was given time to state their goals for the current group.  All agreed that a common report format is the highest current priority.  To that end, Andrew Carter and Don Deardorff stated that reports need a clear breakdown of limiting values amongst P1, P2, P3, P4.

Kyle Olson stated that retrofit bracket test results should be clearly stated if those brackets are part of the ESR (Darin Willis also voiced support for this).  Kyle Olson also proposed that AC358 be revised to only allow retrofit capacity determination through testing and remove the allowance to do hand calculations.

Mark Bryant and others indicated that report capacities should be clearly listed with shaft size and thickness, not just a capacity and a catalog number.  That opinion was shared by Andrew Carter and others.

Mark Bryant also requested that we review section 3.8 regarding Allowable Design Capacities. There is a statement that lists different options for determining capacities, but there is some ambiguity.  Mark encouraged us to revisit that clause for clarity.

The group was in agreement that CTL Thompson should be on the point to lead the process.  To that end, the following timeline was agreed upon:

  • CTL to provide a draft report template to the group by January 26, 2019.
  • By suggestion of several members of the committee, the next group meeting will be an in-person meeting.  Mark Bryant suggested that the meeting could be hosted by MacLean Power Systems at the company’s corporate offices outside of Charlotte, NC.  The meeting will be held on Thursday, March 7, at 9:00 A.M. EST. A calendar invite will be sent to committee members.

NOTE: Should any additional manufacturers wish to join the Ad Hoc Committee, the deadline to join is January 31, 2019.  Interested parties should contact Wayne Thompson.
